… because there just isn’t enough time in the day to do it.
Someone once said that the people who go to therapy for themselves are self-centered; I think that is completely true. Therapy and it’s many forms is one step above buying and reading the self-help books (multi-million dollar business) – they take you step closer to understanding ’self’. When you don’t remember a formula for class or work, syntax and grammars of a different language, colors of the fall 2000 collection of Marc Jacobs, given enough incentive you would look them up. Encyclopedia Britannica made a fortune on it in the past and wikipedia is taking over college papers. There is no difference in understanding partial differential equations for determining futures on GM than your own brain.
Unless it is compromised or in an abnormal state, your brain is like the global economy. On a physiological large scale one part depends on another part (hence the term "network"), just like one country (usually) depends on another country to determine what actions they want to take next. I don’t know of one single person that controls or knows everything about global economy because it is multivariate AND ever changing, just like ourselves.
The incentive to knowing (more of) the global economy is to manipulate it as we benefit the most. Of course no one can see very far into the future, hence all the "I wish I had bought Apple stock at 18$/share" and "Had I known she would do this to me, I’d never marry the f34ker", but no one can deny that we all want to make the best move possible to lead us closer to happiness.
On the topic of nature vs. nurture, nature self therapy is going to a non-psychological doctor such as your primary physician. They ALWAYS ask for your family history because science has proven that our genes are just as greedy to exploit themselves in you (when certain factors are available), as we are ready to exercise on inside market information. Benefits of knowing yourself here can include watching for familial traits like cancer, stroke, heart attack, myopia, birthing twins and mental illness. These are the issues you were born with – damn those genes, but without certain environments some parts of the list can be avoided. This is where nurture and nurture therapy come in.
Prevention, drugs, proper diet and anything your doctor advises for you to do is nuture therapy. Tying back to psychology, instead of blood tests and genetic screening the therapists job is to listen, screen, and give feedback. These people will tell you or help yourself tell you about tendencies such as physical, verbal abusive behaviors; impulsive eating, drinking, shopping; obsessive compulsive disorders, through repeated action or reactions that you have. There are plenty of schools on how to do this, but generally this is
the case when you sign up with a psychologist, psychiatrist or
counselor.
Why do we want or need to have anyone screen for these psycho things? Because knowing yourself is an on going process and people want to survive more efficiently than learning everything by trial and error. By the way, close friends can be just as good for screening you, except most of them have self-gratifying agendas.
